acceptance policy
The Tarbell Center for AI Journalism (“Tarbell”) is a non-profit organization that supports journalism that helps society navigate the development and deployment of advanced AI. Tarbell’s programs do this by providing training, funding, and other resources to reporters covering artificial intelligence and related topics. Tarbell was founded in 2022 and established as a 501(c)(3) in 2025.
Editorial independence
Editorial independence is a core value for Tarbell. Our grantees and fellows maintain complete autonomy over their reporting, guided by journalistic standards rather than ideological preferences. Our funders exercise no control or influence over their reporting. Our full approach to editorial independence is outlined on this page.
Corporate donations
Tarbell does not accept corporate contributions from organizations directly involved in the development and deployment of frontier AI. This includes, but is not limited to: OpenAI, Anthropic, Google DeepMind, Meta, and xAI. Tarbell also does not currently accept personal donations from employees of such companies, nor matched funds or grants from donor-advised funds affiliated with them.
Confidentiality
Tarbell practices funding transparency to maintain public trust and accountability. We are unable to facilitate requests to remain anonymous for donations greater than $10,000. All donors providing greater than $10,000 will be listed publicly on our website, along with their lifetime giving amount to Tarbell (listed donors are currently at this page).
